The School of (East) Indian Languages & Performing Arts was incorporated in 1981 to provide a suitable means to the citizens of Calgary to study the languages and culture of the Indian sub-continent in a classroom setting and thereby promote and preserve Indian languages culture. SILPA is a non-religious, non-profit organization operated by volunteers. In the 2009-10 school year, SILPA is offering courses in Hindi, Bengali, Conversational English, Gujarati, Marathi, Bharat Natyam, Bollywood Freestyle Dance, Carnatic Vocal, Flute (Bansuri), Guitar, Hindustani Vocal, Keyboard, Mridanga, Sitar, Tabla & Yoga.
SILPA also offers facilities for sports like Badminton & Volleyball. SILPA has in the past offered courses in Sanskrit, Malyalam, Tamil, Telegu & Kannada.
Classes are held every Sun from mid-Sept to mid-May at Lester B. Pearson High School between 2pm & 5pm.
Registrations for SILPA take place on the Sun following Labour Day weekend.
