
The School of (East) Indian Languages & Performing Arts was incorporated in 1981 to provide a suitable means to the citizens of Calgary to study the languages and culture of the Indian sub-continent in a classroom setting and thereby promote and preserve Indian languages culture. SILPA is a non-religious, non-profit organization operated by volunteers.
In the 2010-11 school year, SILPA offered courses in Hindi, Conversational English as a Second Language, Gujarati, Sanskrit, Bharat Natyam, Bollywood Dance, Hindustani Vocal, Carnatic Vocal, Flute (Bansuri), Garba, Guitar, Keyboard, Mridangam, Sitar, Tabla, Violin & Yoga. SILPA had a total enrollment of over 220 students in the 2010-11 school year.
SILPA also offers facilities for sports like Badminton & Volleyball. SILPA has in the past also offered courses in Bengali, Marathi, Malyalam, Tamil, Telegu & Kannada.
Classes are held every Sun from mid-Sept to mid-May at Lester B. Pearson High School between 1:30pm & 5pm.
Registrations for SILPA take place every year on the Sun following Labour Day weekend.
