SILPA

School of East Indian Languages & Performing Arts of Calgary, commonly known as SILPA, is recruiting for qualified teachers for the upcoming 2011-12 school year.

SILPA is a 30+ year old non-profit organization in Calgary with the aim of providing suitable means to the citizens of Calgary to study the languages and culture of the Indian sub-continent.  To achieve this mandate, SILPA offers classes from September through May, except for X’mas and statutory holidays, every year on Sunday afternoons at a high school in NE Calgary.

Currently, SILPA is looking to fill the following positions.

1.  Sitar Teacher

Teach introductory level Sitar to students ranging from 14 years of age to adults.

 

The teacher must be proficient in playing Sitar and must have experience of teaching Sitar besides being a good communicator and fluent in English.



2.  Keyboard Teacher

Teach introductory level Keyboard, using the Hindustani Classical notes, to students ranging from 8 years of age to 16 years.

 

The teacher must be proficient in playing Keyboard or Harmonium in the Hindustani Classical notes and must have experience of teaching the instrument (preferably to children) besides being a good communicator and fluent in English.



3.  Mridangam Teacher

Teach introductory level Mridangam to students ranging from 10 years of age to adults.

 

The teacher must be proficient in playing Mridangam and must have experience of teaching the instrument besides being a good communicator and fluent in English.



4.  Bengali Teacher

Teach introductory level Bengali (reading, writing and speaking) to students between the ages of 8 years to 16 years while ensuring that there is a fun, engaging way of teaching a heritage language in an environment conducive to learning.

 

The teacher must be fluent in English and Bengali.  Preference will be given to candidates with prior experience of teaching Bengali. The teacher should also have good communication and organizational skills.



All these positions require the candidate to possess good organizational skills as well as medium level proficiency with MS-Word, MS-Excel, E-mail and Internet research.
